Scandola and the Piana Calanques by boat
The coast between Piana and Scandola is best understood from the water, but offers few escape routes when a western swell arrives. Porto or Galéria leave time to explore; starting in Calvi adds distance and calls for a larger reserve.

Indicative route
Choose half a coast, not a checklist
From Porto, Piana, Capo Rosso, Girolata and the edge of Scandola can form a coherent day without turning every stop into a race.
Read the water outside Porto
Observe the swell on the headlands before committing and confirm that the return will remain comfortable. Long swell may be almost invisible at the berth and awkward outside.
Follow Piana without hugging the rock
Cliffs and caves invite a close approach, yet rebound, traffic and depth demand a prudent stand-off and continuous lookout.
Use Girolata as the breathing point
The bay creates a natural pause without guaranteeing room or shelter from every direction. It is also the decision point before continuing towards Scandola.
Observe Scandola and return in daylight
Explore only from authorised areas, at low speed and without assuming landing is possible. Leave time to avoid combining fatigue, low sun and a building sea.
Conditions
Wildness is part of the route
Protection from western swell is intermittent. Headlands, rebound and cliffs reduce fallback options, so the right plan may focus solely on Piana or solely on Scandola.
Scandola is a strictly protected reserve. Navigation, speed, stopping, anchoring, fishing and landing rules must be checked in current official sources.
Check before departure
- Check residual swell as well as forecast wind.
- Read current Scandola reserve rules and temporary restrictions.
- Prepare one short Piana version and one Galéria-side version.
- Keep enough fuel and daylight for a return without forced speed.
Distances and times are planning ranges. Check official charts, notices to mariners, local regulations and a current marine forecast. The skipper remains responsible for every decision.
FAQ
Practical questions
Which harbour is best for Scandola?
Porto and Galéria reduce the run; Calvi suits a longer day and a suitable boat. The best base is ultimately the one that puts the chosen area on the sheltered side of the day.
Can a boat anchor inside the reserve?
Protection rules are strict and several activities are prohibited or controlled. Use current official regulations rather than an old cruising account.
Can Piana and Scandola fit into one day?
They can from a nearby harbour in good conditions, but the route must remain easy to shorten. A slower visit to one area is often the better day.
