Corfu and Paxos by boat: planning the crossing
The Ionian is often more manageable than the Aegean, yet Corfu–Paxos remains a crossing. Lefkimmi preserves time on Paxos; Gouvia produces a long day. The base is the first distance-saving decision.
- Departure
- Lefkimmi, Benitses or Gouvia
- Indicative distance
- 30 to 55 NM depending on the base
- Time under way
- 4.5 to 7 hours under way
- Season
- May to October
- Exposure
- Open crossing and afternoon Ionian breeze
Indicative route
Reduce the crossing before choosing caves
From Lefkimmi, Lakka and one part of Paxos’s western coast leave a realistic return margin.
Start in southern Corfu
Every mile saved at departure becomes stopping time or return reserve.
Cross before the breeze
Morning is often more regular. Set course and lookout before Corfu drops behind.
Choose Lakka or the caves
Adding harbour, Antipaxos and the full west coast turns the day into a race. One principal area is enough.
Return with a direct option
Ionian breeze often builds in the afternoon. A direct return must remain available without one last compulsory stop.
Conditions
Gentler water does not shorten the crossing
Thermal breeze can put chop against the return. Fatigue and fuel use rise when planned speed is no longer comfortable.
Paxos harbours and bays fill quickly in season. Never assume a berth or buoy.
Check before departure
- Choose the southernmost practical base.
- Check sea and visibility at both crossing times.
- Limit Paxos to one principal area.
- Prepare a version without landing.
Distances and times are planning ranges. Check official charts, notices to mariners, local regulations and a current marine forecast. The skipper remains responsible for every decision.
FAQ
Practical questions
Can Paxos be visited in a day from Corfu?
Yes, especially from southern Corfu with a suitable boat and forecast. From Gouvia, considerably more of the day is spent under way.
Should Antipaxos be added?
Only when timing and sea leave margin after Paxos. It should never become compulsory.
Is the Ionian Sea always calm?
No. Breeze, thunderstorms and swell can quickly change comfort and return speed.
