Indicative route

One principal island and one secondary stop

From Split, Hvar and the Pakleni are the practical limit for a day with swimming and return margin.

  1. Leave Split before fast traffic builds

Ferries and excursions demand clear lookout from the start. Course towards Brač or Šolta follows the wind.

  2. Use Milna or Šolta as the decision point

These nearby options let the route shorten before crossing to Hvar when reality differs from the forecast.

  3. Make Hvar or the Pakleni the centre

Landing in Hvar and swimming in the Pakleni are different plans. Choose one as the priority.

  4. Return without adding Vis

Vis materially extends the route and removes the simple fallback. Start from Hvar or include it in a multi-day cruise.

Conditions

The archipelago provides shelter, not extra time

Bora, jugo and thermal breeze create different water in each channel. Islands can hide the next sea until late.

Harbours, buoys and bays are heavily used. Any unbooked shore stop needs an alternative independent of berth space.

Check before departure

  • Choose Hvar/Pakleni or Vis, never both by default.
  • Mark ferry and fast-boat routes.
  • Check wind in the Brač, Šolta and Hvar channels.
  • Prepare a short Šolta or Brač loop.

Distances and times are planning ranges. Check official charts, notices to mariners, local regulations and a current marine forecast. The skipper remains responsible for every decision.

FAQ

Practical questions

Can Split–Hvar–Vis be done in one day?

A fast boat can cover the mileage, but stop time and margin disappear. Hvar and Vis should be separate days.

Hvar town or the Pakleni Islands?

Hvar suits a planned shore visit; the Pakleni suit a swim stop chosen for wind. Combine them only when traffic and timing allow.

What is the fallback from Split?

Šolta, Brač or a coastal loop keeps the day useful without a long crossing.
