Ibiza and Formentera by boat in one day

The passage between Ibiza and Formentera funnels many boats through limited water. Leave early, choose Espalmador or one Formentera beach as the principal stop and keep time to cross back before peak breeze and traffic.

4 to 6 hours under way in total

Indicative route

Cross early, stay longer, return with margin

From Ibiza, focus on one basin around Espalmador and northern Formentera rather than a full circuit.

  1. Leave Ibiza before traffic builds

An early start makes ferry routes easier to read and allows visibility and chop to be checked before the crossing.

  2. Navigate the Freus attentively

Channels, shoals, fast traffic and wind require precise route monitoring. Visual shortcuts never replace the chart.

  3. Choose Espalmador or Illetes

One principal stop reduces manoeuvring over sensitive seabeds. Respect buoys, exclusions and Posidonia.

  4. Return before the passage saturates

The way back is a second crossing, not an administrative transfer. Leave time to slow down, avoid wake and alter course.

Conditions

Do not treat the crossing as a transfer

Breeze and traffic can build together. Visibility, ferry routes and sea state in the Freus need monitoring both ways.

Formentera and Espalmador strongly protect Posidonia. Anchoring is not the default; authorised zones and buoys come first.

Check before departure

  • Mark ferry routes and official channels.
  • Check wind and waves at both crossing times.
  • Identify authorised stopping without seagrass damage.
  • Prepare a full Ibiza alternative if the passage closes.

Distances and times are planning ranges. Check official charts, notices to mariners, local regulations and a current marine forecast. The skipper remains responsible for every decision.

FAQ

Practical questions

Is the Ibiza–Formentera crossing easy?

It is short, but traffic, shoals, breeze and wake require real preparation. Short does not mean trivial.

Can Formentera be circumnavigated the same day?

That materially lengthens the outing. For a comfortable day, focus on the north and keep a full circuit for a longer programme.

How can Posidonia be avoided?

Use official charts and systems, take buoys when available and visually confirm the authorised area before any manoeuvre.
