Mallorca by boat: choose the right coast for the day

Mallorca is not one boating destination but four very different coasts. A good day begins by selecting a sector rather than collecting distant coves. Wind decides between Tramuntana, Palma Bay, Formentor and the south-east.

Departure
Palma, Port d’Andratx, Sóller, Alcúdia or Portocolom
Indicative distance
20 to 45 NM within one sector
Time under way
3 to 6 hours under way in total
Season
May to October, early starts in summer
Exposure
Strong headland effects and long legs without fallback

Indicative route

Build one day around one coast

From Port d’Andratx, Dragonera and one or two western calas make a coherent loop. Apply the same proximity and fallback logic from any other base.

  1. Choose the leeward sector

Comparing all four coasts before departure avoids crossing half the island by boat against the weather.

  2. Use the first headland as the test

Dragonera, Formentor and Cap de Ses Salines can magnify wind and sea. An early decision still leaves a sheltered bay within reach.

  3. Keep one principal cala

Entrances are busy and seabeds protected. A stop selected for the wind is better than a string of photographs.

  4. Return before peak sea breeze

Thermal wind and traffic often build chop. An earlier planned return keeps the crew fresh and fuel use more predictable.

Conditions

Changing coast is often the best Mallorca fallback

The Tramuntana coast is spectacular and exposed, with limited shelter. Palma and Alcúdia offer more options without removing headland effects.

The Balearics protect seagrass and regulate several areas. Moorings, buoys, reserves and access rules need local confirmation.

Check before departure

  • Select one cruising basin for the day.
  • Check wind and swell at the headland closing the loop.
  • Book or identify authorised mooring equipment.
  • Name a cala close to the base as the fallback.

Distances and times are planning ranges. Check official charts, notices to mariners, local regulations and a current marine forecast. The skipper remains responsible for every decision.

FAQ

Practical questions

Can Mallorca be circumnavigated in one day?

Not as a comfortable day outing. The island works in sectors; a full circuit is a multi-day cruise.

Which coast suits a first trip?

A bay close to the base with several fallbacks is simpler than a long exposed shore. Palma or Alcúdia can work depending on the forecast.

When should a boat leave to avoid congestion?

An early start reduces traffic and heat and leaves more margin before the afternoon breeze.
