Menorca by boat: north or south according to wind

Menorca rewards crews who do not try to cross the whole island. Famous calas cluster in the south; the north is rougher and more exposed. Mahón, Ciutadella and Fornells produce very different days chosen by wind, not beach fame.

Indicative distance
20 to 40 NM within one sector
Time under way
3 to 5.5 hours under way

Indicative route

Make north versus south the first decision

From Ciutadella, a south-western day can link Son Saura with one main cala without pushing across the island.

  1. Read the water outside Ciutadella

Conditions at the entrance quickly confirm whether the chosen coast still fits the wind and swell.

  2. Choose an accessible cala, not only a famous one

Macarella and Turqueta can saturate. A quieter inlet with the right orientation often makes the better stop.

  3. Limit anchoring changes

Sensitive seabeds and congestion make every manoeuvre costly. One principal stop preserves swimming time.

  4. Return without a last-minute headland

Keep margin to reduce speed or remove the final cala when the wind changes.

Conditions

A small island with genuinely different seas

The Tramuntana can close the north while the south remains usable, with wrap-around effects at both ends. One forecast for “Menorca” is not enough.

Reserves, seagrass and swimming areas govern several calas. Confirm access and the authorised way to stop.

Check before departure

  • Compare northern and southern coasts separately.
  • Choose a base that avoids rounding the island.
  • Name one main cala and one fallback.
  • Check protected zones and available buoys.

Distances and times are planning ranges. Check official charts, notices to mariners, local regulations and a current marine forecast. The skipper remains responsible for every decision.

FAQ

Practical questions

Which Menorca coast is easiest?

The coast that is leeward and close to the base on the day. The south is not always calm and the north is not always closed.

Can Ciutadella and Mahón be linked in one day?

Distance and headlands make it a long passage, poorly suited to a relaxed day with stops.

Does a buoy need booking?

In equipped or protected areas, booking may be required. Current official local systems provide the answer.
